MMA's Best Predict Brown vs. Faber 2
Ariel Helwani
June 3, 2009
Behold day two of Dana White's WEC video blog. In this installment, the UFC president asks many of the MMA's top stars who they think will win the epic rematch between Urijah Faber and Mike Brown on Sunday night (VERSUS, 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT).
Some of their responses may surprise you.
And while we're on the topic of predictions, WEC.tv recently asked some of the top MMA journalists covering the sport (and myself) to weigh in on the biggest featherweight title fight in MMA history. Here's what some of them had to say:
Sergio Non, USA Today
Prediction: Brown
It will be a much tougher, longer fight this time, but Brown has the tactical acumen to get past Faber's whirling dervish style and the strength to keep him grounded.
Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports
Prediction: Faber by unanimous decision
Before the first fight, I said I felt people were underestimating Brown and weren't giving him enough of a shake against Faber. This time, I believe many are underestimating Urijah. It's a very close fight that could go either way. I expect a fast-paced fight with a lot of up-and-down action, but look for Faber to sneak out a decision and perhaps set up a decisive third bout between them.
Ryan Hockensmith, ESPN.com
Prediction: Faber by TKO 2
Mike Brown is very good---the guy hasn’t lost since 2005. But there are only a few fighters on the planet as gifted as Faber. On occasion, guys this good get sloppy. That’s what happened in the first fight. And that’s what won’t happen again. Faber avenges the loss... And sets up a third fight.
Dave Doyle, Yahoo! Sports
Prediction: Faber by decision
These guys are so evenly matched that I’m going to take the easy way out and say that Faber rides the support of his hometown fans to gut out a victory. Brown took the first fight in American Top Team territory, so we’ll have to settle this with a third fight in neutral territory.
Carlos Arias, O.C. Register
Prediction: Faber
Brown is extremely strong and powerful at 145 pounds, but Faber is one of the most creative fighters I've seen. I believe Faber will make the changes and adjustments necessary to win the rematch.
Dann Stupp, Dayton Daily News
Prediction: Brown by decision
It's a tough call, but I think Mike Brown defends his title at WEC 41. However, I don't think Urijah Faber makes it easy on him. I expect the rematch to last a lot longer than the first fight with the judges ultimately deciding the winner.
Todd Martin, CBS Sports
Prediction: Brown by TKO
In their first fight, Faber was having trouble with Brown's size and power before he got reckless with the spinning back elbow. He won't make that sort of mistake again, but I see Brown wearing Faber down with strikes and scoring a TKO victory later in the bout.
Michael David Smith, Fanhouse
Prediction: Brown by TKO 3
Mike Brown by third-round TKO. Brown is bigger and stronger than Faber, and he's a smart fighter who knows how to exploit that advantage. Faber will move around the cage and avoid a quick knockout like their first fight, but Brown will be too much for him to handle for 25 minutes.
