Departure: Tonnerre
Two hours away from Paris and one and a half hours from Dijon, Tonnerre lays claim to a wealth of advantages in a privileged environment.
Traces of the city’s historic past are visible at every street corner, walking through the streets or strolling along the canal. Tonnerre possesses outstanding assets as a major tourist attraction: l’Hôtel Dieu des Fontenilles (medieval hospital complex) dating from the 13th century, the Saint-Pierre and Notre-Dame Renaissance churches, the Fosse Dionne, a green-blue natural water source, developed as a circular lavoir, and the l’Hôtel d’Uzès, home to the mysterious Chevalier d’Eon.
Throughout its history Tonnerre has been associated with famous characters: Marguerite de Bourgogne, but also the Chevalier d’Eon, the Clermont-Tonnerre family, the Marquis of Louvois (minister under Louis the Fourteenth), Emile Bernard (founder of the Pont-Aven school) and Alfred Grévin, founder of the waxwork museum of the same name.
